First Weekend in Prague

It is now Sunday and our fourth day in Prague. Our apartment seems a little more like home now. We are beginning to get settled after a few trips to the shopping mart to add a bedcover, sauté pan, and various other items to what is a fully “furnished” apartment. There is a small washing machine, but no clothes dryer. The dish washer is now John and Phyllis. There is no garbage disposal, so it is like stepping back a bit in time
Our shopping trip included our first venture onto the “metro” which is an incredible subway system that links the city from north to south and east to west. However, directionality is a difficult concept to grasp since there are no straight squared off blocks of streets with street names being very foreign and changing from one to another.
We had a lovely dinner with an American couple who have been in Prague for five years. They are with the Evangelical Free Church and assist missionary couples in all of Eastern Europe. They were able to share some vital information on how to communicate by internet and phone, how to recognize and what to shop for when buying groceries. There are quite a few supermarket type grocery stores with many other small grocery, fruit and vegetable, meat markets, and bread bakeries all around where we and thousands of other people live. Since we live in one of many old apartment buildings in the area, the necessity for people to walk and carry their food to their home is the way of life.
Today we will attend the International Church of Prague which is an English speaking church. John, who has been there on his last visit to Prague, estimates that it will take about 35 minutes by subway and bus to get from our apartment to the church location. That also include a little bit of walking.

The couple that we visited last night told us they wear out their shoes quickly with all the walking one does over here on cobblestone streets and sidewalks. We purchased some good walking shoes before leaving the States, however, we see the same brand of shoes sold over here with a higher price. Yes, as someone had told us, one can buy anything here. The shopping malls are like American malls. They are not within walking distance, but easy metro rides for us.

It is a sunny day today after experiencing two days of rain. We will find joy in this day with church worship and more sights of the city.
